Beauty in 7C is your Auntie's apartment or your homegirl's or the new neighbor's next door, who invites you over for coffee, shrimp and grits with a side of fresh pineapple, and a chat.
Y'all discuss new designers, thrift shops, politics, beauty secrets and new cultural terrain. The apartment may have limited space, yet it's cozy and warm. It's an invitation to converse, write, make art, and become intimate with soul.
Beauty in 7C is for anyone who's looking to feel empowered by their creative thinking. Oftentimes, whether a New Yorker or a New Orleanian, with the spirit of an urban gazelle in the city or a rural mink in the country, people still forget their creative essence. Folks can lock into a tunnel vision routine of working, paying bills, repeat. I want Beauty in 7C to help people to remember that a creative life widens the scope of what we believe defines a real life.
I believe that with intellectual curiosity, a desire for vibrancy, color, and a willingness to experiment with different arts centered ways of being, any place can become a true home. Because while home does occur between beams and ceilings, with a healthy dose of laughter, home also lives in the
heart and mind.

I relish an opportunity to explore and write down how culture and beauty intertwine, how spiritual beliefs dictate one's creative pursuits, and how cultural politics informs one's sense of identity.
In Brooklyn, I relied on my community and neighbors who lived in my apartment building or in one of the buildings on my block, for creative inspiration, personal swag operandi, and general wisdom for navigating life. In New Orleans, while I no longer live in an apartment building, I still rely on my neighbors who have since become family. Brooklyn and New Orleans have provided rich life experience born out of beautiful community.
My teenage self lived in this apartment building in Brooklyn. My apartment number was “3C”. The building had six floors so the roof was the seventh. The roof is where I would go to think and write and clear my head of stress and anxiety. I was in high school at the time, focused on dance and writing. And like any high school girl coming of age as a young woman about to enter the “real world”, I experienced my fair share of
highs and lows.
When I remember my time living here, I think of the building floors including the roof as analogous to the 7 Chakra internal energy system. The roof with its open air and lovely views of the Brooklyn skyline was the Crown chakra, a place where I connected to that part of myself, which was private and also full of my dreams and possibilities. It is why I‘ve landed on Beauty in 7C as a creative hub. This space reflects that young woman who began to discover her personal magic in a long ago Brooklyn that led her to new magic in a new New Orleans.
Peace and Love.
I go by
Anika Lani.
I left the magical borough of Brooklyn for the
magical city of
New Orleans with hopes of deepening
my writing.
My preferred style is fiction.
In addition, I've always nurtured my passion for makeup, skincare, and all things beauty as I believe these are key elements for spiritual and creative maintenance. I want us all to feel beautiful and free in our
imagination and skin.
